Italy September 30, 2024

On Saturday, September 28, 2024, we gathered for a Youth2EU project session in San Miniato, focused on empowering young people to engage with democracy. The event aimed to spark a conversation about how youth can actively participate in democratic processes, especially through voting. Participants brainstormed ways to encourage their peers to get involved in shaping the future, starting with understanding the importance of their vote. The discussion touched on the significance of being informed, not just about candidates but also about the institutions and policies that impact their lives. With many first-time voters in the room, the dialogue was vibrant, driven by a collective desire to take ownership of the political process. Together, we explored practical ways to make voting more accessible and appealing to young people. Ideas ranged from organizing educational workshops on electoral systems to creating online platforms for discussing policy issues relevant to youth. The group also emphasized the importance of fostering a sense of community responsibility and recognizing that voting is just one part of being an active citizen. By the end of the session, we had crafted a list of actionable steps to encourage youth engagement, reinforcing the idea that democracy thrives when everyone participates.
